Thread: [TUTORIAL] Inserting Mario Kart 7 Hacks: For Dummies!
Author Posted on 2015/11/02
Super Hello there! So you want to hack Mario Kart 7, huh? Well, you came to the right place.

Since ROM Hacking on the latest firmware is now possible thanks to HANS, I decided to make a tutorial to cover it because, well, no one else has, really.

So first and foremost, you're gonna need the following things in order to hack MK7:

* A way of accessing the Homebrew Launcher.

* A Mario Kart 7 RomFS (you can see a tutorial about it here).

* RomFS Builder.

* A hex editor (I recommend HxD).

All right, now that we have everything, let's start.

Building the RomFS

Okay, once you extract the RomFS, you just have to replace the files with whatever you want. Generally, people want to replace the tracks, so just go to romfs > Course and replace them freely. Of course, they have to match the name, so be wary with this.

After it's done, open RomFS Builder and locate the romfs folder with Mario Kart 7 on it, then click Go. Wait until it asks you to locate the file, which should be in the following location:

: > hans (NOT on the 3ds folder).

Once that's set, here comes the following part:

Removing the Hex Bytes

NOTE: Because the newest version of HANS no longer requires you to strip some bytes from the RomFS, this part of the tutorial is no longer neccesary, at least for the people who use the latest version of HANS (why wouldn't you, anyway?).

Okay, now you have to open the file in a hex editor and do the following:

You have to remove bytes from offset column 00000000...

http://i.imgur.com/FoB8Qf8.png
So it should look like this:

http://i.imgur.com/s213CFP.png
You'll want to go to the HANS menu with Mario Kart 7 loaded, so you can know the ID of the title, which should be here:

Only the last 8 digits will be neccesary. So, in my case, the ID and name of the RomFS I have to use is '00030800.romfs'.

Now that that's done, just extract the SD card, start the Homebrew Launcher, HANS, select YES on the SD card option thing and press start. Mario Kart 7 will start and your "hax" will load. Congratulations! You just learned how to insert MK7 hacks (this, in theory, should work with other games, of course).

Don't be shy of making any questions, because that's kinda the point of this thread. If you got anything wrong, just tell me and we can go through it.
...Unless, "of course", you start doing it intentionally, because, oh boy, I'll start shooting arrows at you.

Also feel free to point out stuff I got wrong, or better ways to do it, or stuff like that.

End thread.

Super ...How are you going to start a sequel of a hack you didn't even finish?
Thread: [TUTORIAL] Dumping content from games: For Dummies!
Author Posted on 2015/11/06
Super Oh, hello.

So you may or may not have seen my previous tutorial on how to insert Mario Kart 7 hacks using HANS and wondered, "how the heck am I going to extract a RomFS/get it?!" well, that's precisely why I made this tutorial.

A RomFS has all the content of a game, but in an compressed (?) form, so we have to extract it if we want to hack a game.

As of now, there are MANY ways to extract a RomFS, so I'll pick one out of a hat, and for this tutorial, we'll be using HANSHelper.

So here's what you'll need:

* A game/title you want to dump.

* A way of accessing the Homebrew Launcher.

* HANSHelper.

* braindump prerelease.

Alright, let's start.

Dumping the game

So first, download braindump from the site and put it on the following location:

: > 3ds > braindump (don't create the folder if you're extracting it, well, the folder, I mean).

After that, extract the SD card and start the Homebrew Launcher. Start braindump, select the title you want to dump and braindump will automatically begin the process. Do note that it might be slow, depending on how big the title is. Please bear with this, at least for the moment.

After that's done, you should find the game on the root of the SD card on a folder called something like this:

0004000000xxxxx (the 'x'ses can be anything).

Now we go to the next part:

Extracting the RomFS

First, we put HANSHelper in the folder where the RomFS and ExFS are, then we boot it.
From there, HANSHelper guides us on the process, but eh, I'm still gonna list it here, just because.

We want to extract the RomFS, so we press 1.

Then it asks us what do we want to extract, so press r for the RomFS, as I doubt we're gonna need the ExFS (for now...).

Then it asks us to enter the path of where the RomFS is located, but since HANSHelper is already there, we're gonna press enter.

Now it asks us to enter the path of where do we want to save the extracted RomFS, so just enter where do you want it to go (I actually haven't tested this function yet, so I'd like it if someone told me if the way they did it worked...).

After that, it returns to what it was initially, meaning that the RomFS was already extracted.

Hooray! You just extracted a RomFS! Now it should appear in a folder explicitly called "romfs" in wherever you saved it.
Now you're free to go wild with it.

Again, ask me any questions you have as I'll be glad to help you (I barely get any replies...), and also tell me if I got anything wrong, or better ways to do it, or so.

End thread.

Well, the tutorial starts out a bit too fast for me. Like, how am I even supposed to be able to run Homebrew on a 3DS? I know there's probably dozens of tutorials out there, but i'd like to know of the most efficient, up to date method. Also, does my 3DS need to be a certain firmware? In that case, i'm probably screwed. :(

I had thought of also making a tutorial on that, but considering that it should be the simplest of things, and more importantly, that there are little to no free entrypoints, well, I'd rather not.

As of now, if you want to install the Homebrew Launcher, you need to have either of the following things (that is, you don't need to have ALL of these things):

All firmware versions

* Cubic Ninja.

* The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D and a Save Dongle.

* Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS, a New Nintendo 3DS and Linux.

9.X-10.1?

* Just your web browser and an extreme avoidance to wireless communications (so the web browser doesn't get updated).

If you don't have/can't do any of these things, you can't, sadly, launch homebrew for the moment.

I can't seem to do it. ;_; I don't think I'm good enough to be able to modify the ROMFS. Can someone else edit for me please? I also think I might need the new coding in order to give it to Nintendo in order to fix that same glitch I'm talking about in MK8.

Super Okay, theres 3 possible outcomes I can think of; none of them might be correct, however.

Better than nothing, though. Isn't it?

1. MKDSCM's NSBMD Creator only supports SketchUp Pro importing. (???)

2. The texture file size is too big.

3. You forgot to check something that makes it export the material in the appropiate form for the importer to create the texture.

Alright! I need the romfs and also the exefs files. But how can i convert these files to cia now?

You can't make a CIA file out of just a RomFS and an ExeFS. I'm not sure if you can do it with those two plus something else, but you can compile the RomFS to use it with HANS. Perhaps that tickles your fancy.

How can you convert something to CIA if you're missing 2 important parts of it?

I really don't know. All what i really want, is to test CTs and also other hacks on citra, because the emulator just supports cia and cxi files. It is so costly, to test just little things on 3DS with HANS.

Well, all you're gonna need for that is a rip of the RomFS and the ExeFS of Mario Kart 7, only then you can compile it for playing in Citra.

This is it.

As time went on and on, it became clear that the people working on this quite... lost something.
What would it be?

I'd take a guess at it being just about everything connected to the emotions.

It actually became quite tiresome for the Ermii Kart DS Team to keep working on this, and I could see that some people were just upset.

Amidst this and the lack of progress I think I see, I've decided to share this one last thing with you guys.

That was directly taken from the latest source branch of EKDS, thus it has some things that are incomplete/and or broken.

In case it doesn't work, use this link above.

One last thing.
