Thread: MKDS Custom Characters: Texture Problems
Author Posted on 2016/07/28
User 281 Hello! So I am kinda new to Character hacking and I keep running into the same problem everytime I try to create my own model.... My FAVORITE character has always been birdo, and I wanted to add her over yoshi in Mario Kart DS. SO, what I did to "create" her was:

1) Extracted the LOW-poly model of Yoshi (I plan to Make her static)
2) Opened/Imported the model in BLENDER and then made minor adjustments= I flattened Yoshi's nose, and made the top horn look like a bow on the back of his head.
3) Exported the model as an .obj
4) Opened MKDSCMLast and used the nsbmd creator, pressed normal scale and checked "make .nsbtx"
5) Then I replaced the old files with the new files and started the game

BUT, when I hover over the character it is a solid grey (Textureless) color, and when I try to open the textures in EFE or MKDSCM it pops up with an error saying, " Unhandled exception has occured in your application

InvalidArgument=Value of '0' is not valid for 'SelectedIndex'. Parameter name: SelectedIndex."
and then when I press Continue, the texture window opens, but its empty...... Swiftie Luna had the exact same problem in an older thread, but it doesn't say how she solved it. PLEASE HELP, nobody on NSMBHD knew how to fix it! ;_;

User 281 Thanks for the help! I had forgot that the texture file name had to match the model name, and.... yes I am always asking you to add birdo to EKDS.... I know that you know how to make these extravagant animated models, and with all the trouble I was having I was ready to give up. I really just wanted to play as birdo in MKDS... I never thought ermelber would even see my comment, let alone reply to it lol.

I truly and deeply am sorry for getting on everyones nerves, especially TruelyJohn64, you have helped me so much and wish I could just restart. SORRY and THANKS for everything!

Thread: Custom Characters: Nitro Material?
Author Posted on 2016/08/17
User 281 HELLO!!! I recently made a birdo model for MKDS, and while everything works in game, the model doesn't have the same shading like the other racers, and the blooper ink, star stream, and course lighting don't work on the model.... I know its because its not made of the right material, and that you're supposed to have "nitro material" or something along those lines...... My computer will not let me get programs like maya, 3dsMax, etc... for some reason they allways fail to download/ Won't Install on my computer, as I have tried multiple times with no success. I know some of these programs are neccessary to get the nitro material, so I have no chance of getting it. If someone could please help me fix this model (Make It Shaded) I would be so very GRATEFUL!!! The Birdo Model is on the hack store under MKDS CUSTOM CHARACTERS.

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ALL THE HELP

User 281 Im very nooby when It comes to Computer Stuff, and I don't know how to provide a direct download link.... but the birdo model on the Hack store should have an obj file when you download it, but I'm waiting for it to be approved...

User 281 I didn't really know if a .nsmb and .nsmtx was needed so they're both provided in the link! Thanks for helping with the model, you have no Idea how happy I am. :awsum: :awsum: :awsum: :awsum:
Thread: NEW CHARACTER.... kinda....
Author Posted on 2016/12/21
User 281 With as much as I talk about this, everyone should know, but I have made a birdo model for Mario Kart DS. The model is far from finished, it lacks the nitro materials, its really 'blocky', and for some reason theres a texture glitch on the mouth/nose.

I really have done all that I know how to do (I'm not very good at this at all) but it still looks like crap.....
Someone told me to use a low poly model of birdo from mkWII or mkDD, but I have no idea what i'm doing with those models...

If you have time or know how to fix any of these problems, I'll link the model below:

https://www.dropbox.com/sh/yajugbq74gsya1t/AAARimeihYqxkMFnsSTApzwha?dl=0

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated! THANKS SO MUCH!

User 281 OH KILL ME NOW!!! x_x x_x x_x
What does this error mean?

It happens everytime I replace a file in EFE.... Ive tried closing everything before I use EFE, but it still says it can't access the file because it's being used in another process...

AND THEN TO TOP EVERYTHING OFF, IT COMPLETELY ERASES THE ROM

Oh and thanks for the Model SWIFTIE!!! It looks Great!!!

EDIT: I can Bypass it sometimes, but it usually pops up when I try to save in the main window....

User 281

This is the error that pops up..... It happens when I try to save EVERYTHING, but its guaranteed to happen when I replace a model file or texture file.....
Ive tried closing everything before saving, Ive tried saving with a clean rom, Ive even tried redownloading EFE.... But it still pops up...
Whats weird about it is that it only happens when you try to save in the main EFE window.... If I open up a .carc file and save, nothing happens, but the main "data" Section always brings up this error

User 281 I was following the tutorial on how to insert custom voices into MKDS, but when I got to the step where you open the sound files in MKDSCM I got stuck.... I press the .swar file like I'm going to open it but nothing happens... I thought maybe it was jut the version I was using, but I tried the version in the tutorial and it won't work either.... I've tried dragging the file in, Opening the file (Open Button), and double clicking the file, but nothing happens....

User 281 I would use NSMB-editor for messing with the item sprites... Just open the editor window and replace the sprite files and palettes as necessary.

User 281 OK, Yes! I called them sprites because basically that's all they are, sorry I wasn't all technical and say item SINGLE TEXTURED FLAT MODELS.... The point is I know how to edit items and DylanzuDS! asked how to do it, so I told him.

To enable just-in-time (JIT) debugging, the .config file for this

Author Posted on 2017/06/06
User 281 Hello Everyone! I am back to hacking, but instead of on the DS, I'm taking a turn in GBA... I'm new to the world of GBA hacking and have no Idea what tools I need. If anyone is experienced in GBA hacking please tell me the proper tools needed in beginning a hack. My Plan in hacking this game is to change the character sprites. I'd rather the characters be members of the Mario franchise rather than random people that Nintendo will never use again.
Thread: Replacing Dry Bones sound files
Author Posted on 2018/01/05
User 281 Ok.... I know how to replace normal in-game character voices..... but dry bones is different from the other characters. Instead of being individual voice files, all Dry Bones noises are made from two different "clicking noises" being played randomly sped up or slowed down... When I replaced these files with baby mario noises.... I got something that sounded like a monkey howling for about a solid minute.... is there any way I could change Dry Bones sound files to play like the other characters? Say... Take toads sound files, copy them, and replace the already existing Dry bones files, and then just edit those like a normal sound file? Or would that jumble all the other sound files in game....
