User 486 so with mariokart 8 deluxe coming out (witch technically is handheld) ive been brainstorming ideas for what to do when modding/hacking becomes an accessible ideal.
so feel free to speculate and share below!

MKGirlism To begin with, welcome to the forums.
Next, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is already out.

That put aside, I'm still waiting for any Mario Kart 8 CTs (and I mean, real ones, and those that actually will get released), and seeing there's currently no way to have Homebrew on a Switch (left alone, there are no ROMs being publish, as far as I know), so I guess we might give it at least a year or two.
After all, Mario Kart 7 got released in 2011, but we only started to officially support it in mid-2014, which was even before MK7 hacking became possible to more people than just Gericom and me.

SGC Yellow MK8 CTs are something I see as not really happening.
The more powerful consoles get, the more detailed things become, and most ROM Hackers can only go so far with quality.
They would probably be pretty hard to make, from a detail stand point, and anything too low quality would look very out of place, anyway.

I honestly don't see MK8 CTs taking off anytime soon.

User 486 yes i know the game is already out, im just thinking of what may be to come. as you said it took mk7 about 3 years to get anything significant, but then again as SGC said mk8 CT still arent a thing even with being about three years old now...

YET. i was only thinking of what (hopefully) could happen not what has or what will.

it is definitely possible, do i think were anywhere close? no but i think we shouldnt be put down yet and learn more about mk8/mk8d modding and have hopes for making it happen!

SGC Yellow Well, I meant more that I don't think that such a community will take off very well.
Most ROM Hackers are fairly young of age, commonly 14 - 18 years old, and the skill level of a lot of people are, very low.
Most can only make N64 quality model, or fairly decent GC/Wii quality models, while very few can make HD Wii U/Switch quality models.

The way I see it, entry difficulty, how difficult it is to make things look nice according to the game's standard, and how easy it is to make things in general,
are all contributing factors to how well a community centered around hacking a certain game will do, as well as the general interest in hacking the game.

If MK8/MK8D CTs do become a thing, we'll more likely than not see a lot of low-quality out of place looking CT, and very few well made ones,
likely even less well made CTs, than what you would see in the MK7, or MKWii community.

Making something good for a game like MK8 would take a near proffesional amount/level of skill, and experiance,
and a lot of ROM Hackers either don't have the time, or the effort to do that sort of thing.

So there's a very high chance, the MK8 hacking community will be very small, or become non-existent, once the actual difficulty of creating things comes to light.

Enthusiasm can only go so far.

SGC Yellow That was with the bridge object from Donut Plains, and it went over SNES Rainbow Road, so no modeling was done here, it seems.
While it is a CT, it seems to be yet another proof-of-concept type of thing.

A lot more work would have to go into making an actual CT.

User 437 Yeah, but it maybe hinting at CTGP-8?

Oh who i'm kidding, its gonna take like 2 years for that to happen.

SGC Yellow But, if you would actually read my 2nd post above, a lot of people really don't seem to be thinking about it in a realistic sense.

Due to the graphical standard of MK8/MK8D, it's very slim that there will be too many decent CTs, you're not taking into consideration,
trust me making any kind of model isn't an easy task, and making something up to the quality standard of the Wii U, is something not many ROM Hackers do.

As I said most are young, between the ages of 14 - 18, or slightly younger, and lack the needed experience.
The quality standard, plus the level of effort most ROM Hackers are willing to put into something very strongly varies,
these things are the reason SMG Hacking never really took off, for example, it was simply too hard for most people to meet the standards,
and put the effort into making things look good when compared to the original game.

The chance that anything like a GCGP-8 will happen is low, the more a game demands, the smaller the community tends to be.

MKGirlism I saw the video A Blue Toad linked to, it indeed proves MK8 CTs are on the raise, and at the same time, it proves SGC's points on what makes MK8(D) CTs so difficult to make.
Technology is one thing, but that's really only because lots of MK8 hackers are simply arseholes who most likely decide to keep their tools and/or documentations private (it's understandable you do this when your tools are still very unstable for example, but I remember seeing a screenshot of someone at one Discord server saying they'll never share that tool).

But technology isn't the biggest problem here, it's quality you can possibly put into a CT, and that video A Blue Toad only proves that.
Like, that track is a slightly moving bridge, and a simple skybox. That's it.
It works fine for proof of concept CTs, or CTs in early development, but there's still plenty to do, before it can be considered "good quality".

Swiftie Luma I just care about simple hacks for MK8/MK8D

That's because i really don't expect that much because , as stated , things get more complicated as the graphics improve and that's just not something we can stop.

Very few people will be dedicated enough to do something of very good quality and that works well.

As for me , i just care about Rosalina's voice since the default one is just a big NO , and a few texture hacks and music hacks.

Just by doing that the game becomes 200% better for me.

Jesse The problem with CT's for mario kart wii and will be for mario kart 8, is sketchup. Almost all people just want a quick and nasty way to make CT's to feel satisfied. Because of the push and pull nature of sketchup, you'll only get one kind of CT: a square like CT. Even the people most skilled at sketchup make CT's with bad topology, so bad that it affects gameplay.

In reality mario kart wii and 8 tracks at nintendo are being designed first and thought through. And above all, they use proper modelling tools (actual modelling tools, sketchup is a sketch tool) like maya or 3dsmax.

Blender does the same job very well too, and its free so there is basically no excuse for people for people not use it. Then you hear people say "I don't have enough time to learn blender" or "blender is too hard I can't learn it". Blender is known for its bad userinterface but what does that say, many everyday people use this tool, it is very much possible to learn it within a reasonable time span. But seeing how most mkwii and probably mk8 hackers are between 14 and 18, they'll be probably to stubborn to widen their skillset. Usually people become more eager to make quality content at age 20. At that point most people stopped with stuff like this.

Mario kart wii hacking is just the worst tool combined with the people in their worst years.
